At the Asbestos Fund, we do more than compensate victims: we also have a prevention mission. As Belgium’s reference centre for asbestos, we work to reduce exposure risks and prevent serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestosis and certain cancers.

To achieve this, we carry out several concrete actions:

  • Informing and raising awareness: we explain to citizens, workers, companies and public authorities the dangers of asbestos and the measures needed to protect against it.

  • Advising and supporting: we guide companies and individuals on safe methods to handle, remove or neutralise asbestos in buildings and installations.

  • Working with authorities and institutions: we collaborate with health services, labour inspectors and other organisations to strengthen safety regulations and ensure they are respected.

  • Monitoring environmental risks: we identify situations where exposure may affect people outside the workplace (workers’ families, nearby residents, etc.) and propose measures to reduce these risks.

Why this is useful for citizens

  • Protecting health: our prevention efforts help limit exposure to asbestos before it causes serious illness.

  • Safety at home and at work: we help everyone understand how to protect themselves or when to call in professionals to intervene safely.

  • Providing reliable information: we offer clear, official advice to avoid dangerous practices or misinformation.

  • Reducing social and medical costs: fewer illnesses mean lower healthcare costs and fewer future compensation payments.

In short, our role as Belgium’s reference centre enables us to protect not only people exposed at work, but the entire population, by reducing the risks of asbestos exposure in everyday life.
