The amount of compensation paid by the Asbestos Fund (AFA) varies depending on the disease. These compensations are tax-free and adjusted according to the consumer price index.

Some compensations are paid monthly, while others may be issued as a one-time payment.

The amounts mentioned above are calculated based on the consumer price index in effect on March 1, 2026. They apply within the framework of compensation granted to victims of asbestos-related diseases, as recognized by the AFA. The amounts vary depending on the type of disease and your personal situation.

 

  • If you suffer from mesothelioma, you are entitled to a one-off compensation payment of €12,682 as well as a fixed monthly allowance of €2,319.

    In the event of death, a lump-sum payment may be granted. The amounts are as follows:

    • €46,380 for the partner,

    • €23,190 for the former partner,

    • €38,650 per child still entitled to family allowances (up to the age of 18).

  • If you suffer from another asbestos-related disease, you are entitled to a monthly allowance of €23,19 per percentage point of incapacity as determined by the physician of the Asbestos Fund (AFA).

    This allowance is reduced by half if you receive another benefit for the same disease under the occupational diseases scheme managed by Fedris.

    In the event of death, a one-off lump-sum payment may be granted. The amounts are as follows:

    • €23,190 for the partner,

    • €11,595 for the former partner,

    • €19,325 per child still entitled to family allowances (up to the age of 18).

  • Under certain conditions, the AFA may also reimburse the portion of medical expenses related to your illness that is not covered by other schemes, in particular by Fedris under the occupational diseases system.

  • In the event of a death recognised by the AFA, the person who paid the funeral expenses may receive a lump-sum allowance of €1,268,20 unless Fedris has already granted compensation for these costs.

  • If regular assistance is required and the AFA has given its approval, you may receive:

    • €1,077,06 per month for part-time assistance

    • €2,154,11 per month for full-time assistance

    This allowance cannot be combined with similar assistance granted by Fedris under the occupational diseases scheme.

  • Once a positive decision has been taken, you will receive a form that must be completed and returned in order to activate the payment.

    You must fill in the upper section and ask your bank to complete the lower section. The original document must be sent by post to the following address:

    When will you receive the compensation?

    • Monthly payments are made at the end of the month concerned.

    • The first payment includes any arrears due since the decision.

    • Payment is made within 45 days following the positive decision, to the bank account you (or the beneficiary) have provided.

    These allowances are not subject to personal income tax, are exempt from social security contributions, and are indexed to the consumer price index.
