The Asbestos Fund (AFA) has launched a new interactive website. In our “asbestos house,” visitors can explore virtually. Room by room, it is possible to discover where asbestos is present and what the best course of action is in each situation. Should you intervene yourself carefully? Do nothing? Or call in specialized help?
Many buildings contain asbestos, but occupants are not always aware of it. This is shown by the figures from OVAM (Flemish Public Waste Agency). In 59% of buildings constructed before 2001, asbestos is present. In Flanders alone, more than 3 million tons of asbestos are still present in buildings today. For the other regions, no concrete figures are yet available. Indeed, an asbestos certificate is not yet mandatory there, but it is already included in future plans for the Walloon Region.
As a visitor, you will also find general and practical information on our website:
-
How to handle asbestos safely
-
When can I, as a victim, turn to the Asbestos Fund?
-
Guidelines for professionals (employers, care providers, etc.)
-

With this new website, the Asbestos Fund aims to place a greater emphasis on prevention: raising public awareness about the risks associated with asbestos and thereby helping to prevent new exposures. Of course, we continue to compensate and support asbestos victims.
Not only is the website new, but our logo has also been updated. This modern design will contribute to better visibility and more effective communication.
